The music of ńoko is dense, at times dirty and mechanical. Trip-hop and, at times, almost jazz-flavored drum’n’bass beats carry a heavy rhythm. Sometimes slow, almost muddy and wet, other times raw and buzzing. There is plenty of grit, improvisation, and textures here whose roughness invites you to explore, diving deep into an open form that fits into a certain libertarian genotype. Each track seems to live, change, pulse, and hypnotize, and this is most beautifully heard in Bird of Sorrow.

We have a fantastic music scene here in the Tri-City, with highly talented, open-minded, and searching artists, and ńoko is yet another proof of that. ‘KO’ is a passionate, incredibly interesting album that takes on an extra dimension in its live concert version. It is proof that jazz can be listened to anywhere, under any circumstances, that jazz can be enjoyed, and that you can dance to jazz.

Ńoko remains a fiercely creative band, yet their music has matured and become much easier to listen to. The exposed melody doesn’t reduce the composition to banality, but allows the listener to more easily tune in and hear what the artist had in mind. There’s no shortage of intriguing sounds, lush electronics, and deliciously broken-up dissonances.
